The inhabitants of the parish of Hjelme suffered a strenuous journey to their church, having to row across the Hjelte Fjord to either Hordabø or Manger. After a petition from seventy farmers in the parish, it was eventually agreed to build a church in the municipality of Manger. Hjelme Church, the first in Øygarden, was consecrated in 1875. This enlightening tour will explain the church’s rich history, the fishermen and farmer’s efforts to have the church built, and the congregation’s arduous journeys to reach the church services on time. You can also enjoy hearing traditional hymn music. The English language tour needs to be booked in advance. A German language tour is also available. Please arrive in good time at the meeting place where you'll be able to purchase a ticket from your guide.
