Would you like to travel 10,000 years back in time and see how the ice age shaped our landscape? Or find out where they pump in the black gold that changed Norway’s fortunes forever? Coast Adventure opens the door to a tavern from the 1700s. We let you row in a boat from 1909, taste the bread that’s been baked in stone ovens since 1887, and see for yourself what life was like in a century-old saltery. We can take you to the island "where no one could believe that anybody could live", or show you the bay where the coastal community caught their last whale in 1961. You can climb the Russian Path up to Fjell Fortress, and consider what it must have been like to be a prisoner of war in such a beautiful place. Once at the top, you can descend into the mountain fortress, and experience the life of a German soldier in 1942. At Sotra / Øygarden the marks of history are easy to spot, and exciting to be a part of. Ancient boat houses stand side by side with the modern oil and gas installations. The Coastal Adventure invites you to a fascinating journey through time to experience life on the coast, both past and present.

Coastal culture

Take a ride in what was the islander’s mode of transport 100 years ago. Breath in the atmosphere of an old saltery and a skillingsbollar (cinnomon cake) baked in a stone oven dating from 1884. Jump in the car and see how the "king of the quay" lived in 1664.

Since the discovery of oil in the North Sea, Sotra / Øygarden has been at the forefront of developing technology to exploit the new resource. This is also true of the marine industries and today the region boasts some of the world's most advanced facilities within the sub-sea and marine industries.
