Local cuisine
The coastal area of Sotra / Øygarden has perhaps the world's finest ingredients for preparing seafood. Fishing has always been an integral part of life for the people in the region. It’s said that every house has its own seafood specialist, one who knows how fresh cod should taste and skilled in the preparation of local seafood delicacies. Traditionally, local dishes have not included mussels, scallops or oysters. "We don’t eat bait", the islanders would say. Catfish, monkfish and skate were also off the menu and were normally thrown back to the sea. That was before the seafood restaurants came and began to prepare dishes from such fine ingredients. Coastal Adventure offers a myriad of culinary experiences, from hotdog with shrimp salad at Ågotnes gas station, to braised catfish at Cornelius seafood restaurant. Fish, shellfish, mussels and even seaweed, make this region a favourite destination for lovers of seafood. The island’s wild sheep provide succulent meat, grazing on heather and basking in the fresh sea air. No matter where you dine, your meal will be served with stunning ocean views. In the archipelago there are excellent places to dine, serving everything from traditional Norwegian cuisine to contemporary delicacies, in a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
