The trail to Nedstavatnet (“the lower tarn”) is an old road used to take the farm animals up to the mountain grazing land in the summer. Today it is a popular trail taking you to the top of the Kvernhus waterfall with a great view of the Mofjord. You can also follow the trail further into the Modalen mountains to Skavlabu, which is a tourist hut owned by The Norwegian Travel Association. Each year in August the local sports club arranges an uphill race to Nedstavatnet, and the fastest athletes reach the top in less than 10 minutes.

The trail is quite steep up through the spruce/mixed wood with a flatter part half way up. It is clearly visible and has blue and red marks. If you want to enjoy the view of the Mofjord you take to the left over the marsh when you reach the point at the top where the trail flattens out. Then you will soon see the tarn and you follow the smooth rock slopes left towards the dam by the outlet to the Kvernhus waterfall. The route to Skavlabu continues straight forward at the top and has red T-shaped marks. You must allow approx. 5 hours up and in to the hut from this starting point. There are more than 900 meters (in height) to break down, so you should be in good physical shape and have necessary mountain hiking experience.
