This is also the time of the year when nature awakens from hibernation and bursts into a vibrant, colourful setting for one of northern Europe’s major arts events.
A good reason for Bergen to be the venue of the most extensive Nordic festival is the city’s unique history. Edvard Grieg was born here, and his home Troldhaugen is still sought out by music lovers from all over the world. Troldhaugen is also a highly atmospheric concert venue during the festival. The city’s main concert hall, Grieghallen, renowned for its superb acoustics, is the home of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. As a young man Henrik Ibsen was the resident dramatist at the city theatre, and today Bergen is the home of one of the world’s most performed playwrights, Jon Fosse.
The Bergen International Festival has become a regular meeting place for many performers and creative artists from the Nordic countries. The programme includes several premieres and many concerts with the most highly respected singers, instrumentalists and orchestras in Europe. Our extensive programme is not restricted to the concert hall and the theatre stage. Every day brings new outdoor experiences among the beautiful buildings of the city.
